The Top 10 Things to Do and See in Sardinia

Emerald Coast and the Archipelago of Maddalena and Gallura (north east coast)

Hidden coves, white beaches, pink rock and a transparent turquoise sea perfect for diving. This is the Maddalena Archipelago, a group of islands close to Palau, from where you can take one of the many summer boat trips. A little further south is the Emerald Coast, destination of choice for the VIPs that flock here in summer to cruise the islands in their private yachts before stopping at Porto Cervo for some designer shopping.

Alghero, the Coral Riviera City (west coast)

Alghero's historic centre with its ancient fortified walls and bastions is a city that still has a strong Catalan feel. Wander the narrow streets and visit the San Michele Church with its coloured cupola, before exploring the surrounding coastline.  Do not miss the steep cliffs of Capo Caccia and the spectacular Neptunes Caves.

Villasimius and the Kings' Coast (south east coast)

The most south-easterly point of Sardinia is characterised by a succession of small coves and islands. Close to Villasimius, some of the best beaches are Porto Giunco, Simius and Punta Molentis.  Continue along the east coast to the Costa Rei (the Kings' Coast), and take a swim at Cala Pira, Cala Sinzias or the Scogio di Peppino. Make sure you follow the scenic coastal road for great views of the Mediterranean.

Gennargentu Mountain (centre)

This rugged area is home to the Gennargentu Mountain which stands at more than 1800m high. The area is a haven for wildlife including the local deer and birds of prey such as the eagles and griffins who fly amongst the forests of oak trees. Visit the natural spring at Su Cologone on the Supramonte plateau, and the canyon at Su Gorroppu.

Barumini and the 'Nuraghe' (south)

Barumini is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the most important complex of 'nuraghe' on Sardinia.  Nuraghe are small stone towers built in the 16th century BC with a distinctive conical shape without the use of mortar to hold the stones together.

Asinara Island and La Pelosa Beach (north west coast)

A short distance from the fishing town of Stintino, Asinara Island is home to wild boar, sheep and albino donkeys but is uninhabited by humans, especially now that the high security prison which was placed there has closed. Today it is a protected national park which can only be visited with a guide. Just opposite the island is the picture postcard beach of La Pelosa, with its endless white sands and shallow waters making it an ideal place for children.

The Capital of the Island: Cagliari (south east)

A bustling city with a historic centre filled with small artisan shops, Pisan towers and ancient fortified walls. The port area is dominated by the Bastion of San Remy, where you can look out towards the 'devil's saddle', a headland ending at Poletto Beach.

Chia Bay and the ancient city of Nora (south coast)
A coastline of small promontories interspersed by small coves providing sheltered shallow waters, ideal for children. Best beaches to try are Colonia, Porto Campana and S'acqua Durci.  Heading towards Calgari and the Gulf of Angels, you will find Mora, a Phonecian city colonised by the Romans and one of the most important archaeological sites in Sardinia.

Goloritze Bay (east coast)

Goloritze Bay is near to Dorgali, a place where the mountains plunge into the sea, creating a series of rugged cliff faces popular with climbers. During summer take a boat trip to the Bue Marino Caves and stop at one of the small sandy coves for a swim

The Sinis Peninsula (west coast)

An area of wetlands, beaches, quartz rock and sites of archaeological interest including Tharros, an ancient Phonecian port. The Sinis Peninsula is not only an area of outstanding natural beauty, but also an important breeding ground for  birds, especially the local population of flamingos.
